I was sad / disappointed / angry to read that…


Inequality began to be seen in the communities.

It made me sad to see that as the era progressed, people became less free.

In order to maintain a society, whether large or small, people began to be chosen to organize the way each person performed their job responsibilities. This was a way to supervise that everybody was bringing something to society. The power that was given to some people, began to create hierarchies, and the use of power of authority. It is well recognized that, whether due to intellectual, physical or simply luck, many people manage to excel more than others. And what about those that do not have the same capacity? They are the ones that end up being oppressed and with less benefits. This is what began to happen at that time. Social Inequality. 

Another finding that made feel sad was the fact that Earth began to be exploited. With progress communities began to grow. With that, a lot of food began to be required, and more space needed. People started using more natural resources. Taming and domestication began. The result? The land is overpopulated and we have exploited our planet tremendously. We can see consequences already. Our planet has been severely damaged by man.

9) Chapter 18 contains some powerful images. Why do you suppose Strayer chose to include these specific images? Strayer uses these images because they represent Europe in Chapter 18. Every time you see a powerful image it causes a strong feeling. That is what Strayer wanted to demonstrate, the reality and the feeling of the people in each historical event.  How do they illustrate concepts introduced in this chapter? Each image illustrates each event that made history.  The concepts are varied. But each illustration managed to demonstrate how society began to be different. We see people at a high economic level and at the same time we manage to perceive who was affected, the lower class. Among the images we can also see middle class people, the students. In what way(s) do you see the historical developments described in this chapter continuing to evolve in our world today? In the present we can see that some goals of nationalist and independence movements have been achieved.  For example, after decolonization places like Africa and Asia achieved independence from foreign rule and gained a measure of nationalist consciousness. After decolonization and war world II the idea “that humankind was naturally divided into distinct peoples or nations, each of which deserved an independent state of its own was loudly proclaimed by the winning side of both wars.”(Strayer, pag 978). Although not totally, we can see that today there is more freedom and a sense of national independence, which allows us to express our differences in traditions, culture, customs, etc. Meanwhile “In Africa, newly independent nations embraced African cultural styles in dance, music, social norms, family style, and religious outlook.”(Strayer, 982-983). How did Africa’s proximity to Eurasia shape its history? And how did America separation from the Eastern Hemisphere  affects its development? The Africans have had access to more productive crops and domesticated animals from interaction with Eurasia. Trade with Eurasian peoples caused civilizations like Meroë and Axum to flourish. There were also some African societies that practiced Eurasian religions like Islam and Christianity. American separation from the Eastern Hemisphere meant that they had no access to Eurasia 's productive crops, so less civilization was formed in America. There were no agricultural communities because there were no domesticated animals.
