Chapter 22

In what way(s) do you see the historical developments described in this chapter continuing to evolve in our world today?

In the present we can see that some goals of nationalist and independence movements have been achieved.

For example, after decolonization places like Africa and Asia achieved independence from foreign rule and gained a measure of nationalist consciousness. After decolonization and war world II the idea “that humankind was naturally divided into distinct peoples or nations, each of which deserved an independent state of its own was loudly proclaimed by the winning side of both wars.”(Strayer, pag 978). Although not totally, we can see that today there is more freedom and a sense of national independence, which allows us to express our differences in traditions, culture, customs, etc. Meanwhile “In Africa, newly independent nations embraced African cultural styles in dance, music, social norms, family style, and religious outlook.”(Strayer, 982-983).

Racism in the present is almost entirely rejected by nations. Now that we can detect where that old thought of racism came when can start to write a new history. Now that we are more aware we can write a story where there is no inequality.

And as expected, as nations developed the death rates in people decreased. From then on, the life span of human beings has been longer than in the past. Another great change and follow-up was the development of reading and education. Now we can see more educated people, including women and people like me (immigrant) and minority who have the opportunity to acquire a better education. We can also see many organizations talking more about the importance of reading and educating. Although we are a long way from reaching the desired rights, the present is showing us that the fights that began years ago bear fruit in the long run. Maybe we are not going to witness great changes, but our grandchildren or great grandchildren will have the opportunity to live in a world that accepts everyone equally.
