Why Pride sponsors shouldn’t hit pause during Black Lives Matter protests

How has learning World History this summer grown your ability to understand or appreciate the article?

This article talks about how the LGBTQ community is having the support of recognized brands which helps them fight for equal rights. Dallaire says “The number of brands throwing support behind Canadian Pride celebrations seems to grow every year.”. Although the article talks about brands that have supported this community for many years, it also questions the possible inclusion of new minorities such as the black community. Possibly our idea of support is nothing more than a self-interest agreement. The article shows that behind this idea of support there is an old thought that has to do with discrimination and racism.

After Floy's death in the U.S., many people began to protest, which echoed in many parts of the world. Floy's death sparked marches against racism. In turn, this managed to remove past demands, which seem not to have been met. People began to ask for equality rights. Darrell (2020) says “There is an excellent opportunity for brands to still show their Pride, but be more inclusive with the messaging and the images.”After all, the two groups are fighting for the same cause, having the same rights as the others.

These voices were heard by the same people who support the rights of the LGBTQ community, but unfortunately the same support has not been seen for the black community.

We can ask ourselves many questions about what would be the main reason for these ventures by not supporting other communities beyond LGBTQ. One of the answers would be the economic interest that exists behind all this. The gay community is huge so it could be generating a lot which is convenient for brands. The other answer would be that society is not yet really ready for change. It is widely assumed that we are a more educated society with more open ideas, but the truth we still have a lot to learn. There is still no equality, there are still people suffering. We can see and experience racism in many places  and we know it. In addition to this, there are still many minority communities that need to be heard because, like the gay community, these groups need rights like everyone else. Beyond what companies generate, I could say that the support they give is an echo of what society wants to exist. While society is ready to accept the gay community, will it be ready to accept the black community?

So before getting angry and criticizing companies, we have to think that we still have a lot to fight. In the article, the author asks brands a question about their preparation when supporting communities. In this post I ask you, are we prepared to accept that we are all equal?

I am sure that if we all agreed brands would not only be supporting the gay community, but our insistence would make these brands include other minorities. After all they deserve to be heard too.

This article was the most complicated for me. There are many topics that we could bring up based on this. History class has helped me find the root in terms of problems we face in the present. In this article we see brand’s lack of interest towards some minorities which seems to have no explanation whatsoever. However if we think about our history and what minority groups have been fighting for many years we can see that there are still some struggles. Although society has managed to accept many of these groups, it is very evident that there are still a few in the waiting line.
